چکیده

Researchers in typological and functional approaches to language have argued that the cross-linguistic properties of nominalizations follow from the univeral semantic properties of syntactic categories. Specifically, nouns denote objects and verbs denote actions in the prototypical case. In this paper I argue that this prototypical association of semantic type with syntactic category can be represented in an HPSG lexical type hierarchy as a default constraint. Unmarked words will inherit from the categorial default, while words that do not inherit from the prototype will be structurally or behaviorally marked. Thus, default constraints provide a way to import insights about grammatical prototypes from more cognitively oriented work on language into a formal theory of grammatical

The logic of default inheritance in Word Grammar

In principle, default inheritance has always been the underlying logic of grammar, and of morphology in particular. Without inheritance there can be no generalisation; and without default inheritance, there can be no exceptions. Arguably, the study of morphology is the intellectual endeavour where this logic has been tried and tested most successfully in dealing with a miriad of detail which is...

Using Prototypical Objects to Implement Shared Behavior

A traditional philosophical controversy between representing general concepts as abstract sets or classes and representing concepts as concrete prototypes is reflected in a controversy between two mechanisms for sharing behavior between objects in object oriented programming languages. Inheritance splits the object world into classes, which encode behavior shared among a group of instances, whi...

Default inheritance in an object-oriented representation of linguistic categories

We describe an object-oriented approach to the representation of linguistic knowledge. Rather than devising a dedicated grammar formalism, we explore the use of powerful but domain-independent object-oriented languages. We use default inheritance to organize regular and exceptional behavior of linguistic categories. Examples from our work in the areas of morphology, syntax and the lexicon are p...

Why stereotypes don ’ t even make good defaults q

Many concepts have stereotypes. This leaves open the question of whether concepts are stereotypes. It has been argued elsewhere that theories that identify concepts with their stereotypes or with stereotypical properties of their instances (e.g., Rosch, E. (1978). Principles of categorization. In E. Rosch & B. B. Lloyd (Ed.), Cognition and Categorization. Hillsdale, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum Associa...
